My Favourite Holiday.
29th October 2019
To those who are no longer with me,
My
favourite holiday? Halloween. Why? Not a clue. I have no idea why I love it so
much; I don’t really have a reason to. I never got to go trick or treating as a
kid. ‘We’re not American,’ my mum and dad used to say, ‘It’s not our holiday.’
The first time I went trick or treating, I was sixteen and it wasn’t the best
experience in the world. You see Halloween celebrated all the time in movies
and my experience at sixteen did not live up to the hype I had built in my
mind. I went with a friend. A girl I am no longer friends with, she didn’t live
in the best area of town and there was one so far, we could go. There weren’t
many houses that were welcome to trick or treaters and when we did finally
stumble upon a welcoming dwelling, they asked for a trick instead of a treat
and I was completely unaware that that was even an option, let alone something
people did. I remember standing there, rooted to the spot with absolutely no
idea what to say or do and that was it, my night ruined. Another expectation of
life that was nothing like the movies. Now, I’m a lover of make-up and
Halloween is the ideal time for my okay skills to be dusted off and I can
transform myself into a Disney character or a random cinematic villain and it
is glorious.
I have worked a lot of Halloweens in a night
club, I’ve been a vampire, a witch, the Queen of Hell and the Greek Goddess
Persephone, but since leaving that job and actually been able to go out and
celebrate with friends I have been a mermaid and a cat and both outings have
drawn a definitive conclusion for me. I hate a Halloween night out and in order
to truly show my Halloween appreciation, I must host a party. However, that is
pretty difficult in student accommodation, but I know that the day I get to finally
host my long-awaited Halloween party, it will be spook-tacular.
Getting yourself hyped up for Halloween is so
much easier than a holiday like Christmas. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love
Christmas, I fucking love it, but unlike Halloween you have to be hyped for a
whole season. Halloween is gloriously a one-night show. The day after my dad’s
birthday and an all-day event if you’re me and transforming yourself into a
whole new entity. I cannot wait to finally host a Halloween party. It will be
weeks in preparation but so worth it. To just spend one night under the same
roof as my Halloween loving friends, scaring the scaredy cats of the clan, not
one of us looking like ourselves, all of us being able to relax and let go in a
safe environment. Halloween really is the best holiday, and if you don’t agree,
that is fine, you’re entitled to your wrong opinion.
So, that is what you missed.
Love, always
